You can upload one or more pictures to appear along with your message. To do this you need to A) send the picture to our server, and B) attach that picture to your message. The pictures must be no larger than 8 megs in file size, and made in either GIF or JPG format. The file name must have an extension of .gif, .jpg, or .jpeg. Here are the specifics:

1) Click the "Attach File(s)" button near the bottom of the message editing screen.
2) From the new window that opens, click the Browse button to find the file on your computer.
3) Click the Upload File button
4) Click the Attach File link

The new file upload window should close and you should see the file you just uploaded listed below the editing screen. Once you post your message, the picture(s) should appear at the bottom of the message.

The pictures below were uploaded in this way. Each is a screen shot of the picture upload process, and they should help make clear what you need to do (click each to see it full size).

Some users of forums contribute nothing but a single post that turns out to be spam (a link that is posted on forums of all different topics for the sole purpose of generating traffic to another site). One such post has been made here recently. The result was that the user is now banned and the topic is removed.

Before taking this action, we will check a couple things. First we look to see if the poster has added any other content to this forum that appears to be on topic (in this case the user had not). Second, we check on the web for other forums with identical or nearly-identical posts. In this case we found dozens of similar posts and knew that the message was spam.

If you feel a message has been removed unjustly you are free to contact the Forum Moderator

In your PROFILE link, under Personal Options, you can set the number of "Days back to view topics for." This determines when topics are hidden from you to reduce the clutter a bit. I have set a high number as default, but it may have changed if you are not seeing older messages. But if you want to reduce the number of old messages you see, just change that to a lower number, such as 30. The messages older than 30 days will still be found in a search, but they won't clutter your main veiw.

When importing the settings from the previous version of the forum, the new software got a little "confused" about how to handle new posts. Some users put up new posts with multiple paragraphs, only to see them on the forum run together into one paragraph.

The settings that control this have been fixed (we hope!). Any future posts should be fine. The posts from before the new software should also be fine. It is only posts made between 2/18 and 3/7 that were affected.

You can easily correct a post you made during the "troubled" time. If you are logged in you should see an "Edit" button under each of your posts. Just click on that to open the edit window. I think you will see your paragraphs just the way you entered them. Then click the "Edit Message" button (you don't have to change anything if the message looks right in the Editor window). You message should be fixed on the forum.

In order to make this work, we needed to disable the fancy WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) message editor. It uses Microsoft controls that are not available in all browsers, so we are just turning off that feature. That editor works fine if everyone is using the same browser, such as might be the case with a company's Intranet forum, but does not "play nice with others" when not everyone has the same browser.

If you have logged in successfully, the login box should be replaced with the header for "Private Messages" on the left. If you don't see that, then you probably are blocking our cookies somehow.

Once you log in, you should see text near the top of the page that says:

Women in Woodworking (yourname) - 0 new messages

Just click on the "0 new messages" part, which is linked and will take you to your Private Message area. In the main area there is a drop-down selector that defaults to "Inbox". Another option there is "Sent" and that will let you see your sent messages.

Note that when you compose your private message, there is a checkbox at the bottom where you can tell it not to save it in your sent items. But by default they will be saved.

Regarding marking messages as "read" - this is handled more-or-less automatically by the software. Once you log in and go to the forum, you should see an indication on the threads' icon if there is a new post since your last visit. It will also show on the far right who the last poster was.

NOTE: the feature of displaying the new threads with a special icon will only work properly if you use the forum's navigation controls to get around within the forum. Do not use the browser's back-arrow button to go back to the home page after reading a thread. (The forum keeps track of topics/threads you have read by using browser cookies. If you do not click on the forum's navigation controls, you may be preventing the forum from setting those cookies, so it will lose track of what you have already read.)

As you are reading a topic, at the top and bottom of the list of messages you will see a "bread-crumb trail" to make it easier to navigate. It has a series of links that start with the home page of the forum and continue to the topic you are reading at the time. While reading messages in the main forum (not this FAQ section), you will see that the 2nd link in the bread-crumb trail is "Women in Woodworking", which will take you to the main list of topics. Clicking the FORUMS link (the first one in the trail) will take you to the forum's home page, which has a link to the Women in Woodworking topic list, a link to this FAQ section, and a link to your Private Topics.

You can also click on the "latest topics" link, which will show you where the new posts are and link you right to them.

See also the FAQ titled "Where are the older messages (or why am I seeing so MANY old messages)?"
